The Inner Planet Orrery designed and handmade by Staines & Son. We named this orrery 'Inner Planet' as the term refers to the four planets that orbit within the asteroid belt; Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.
Like the Tellurion The Inner Planet Orrery demonstrates the precessions of the moons nodes and will demonstrate precisely why and when eclipses can occur. In addition to the Earths rotation about it axis, This orrery also features the rotation of Mercury and Venus. Mercury's rotation is tidally locked to the sun but not in the same manner as the Moon is to the Earth. The resonance is 3:2 meaning a single solar day on Mercury last two Mercury years. Venus is the only planet with a retrograde rotation. When looking down upon the north pole Earths closet neighbour will be seen to rotate in a clockwise direction. Mars has an axial tilt of 25 degrees. It is close to that of Earth's tilt, although it is directed towards another part of our solar system. Mars' day rotation is also represented along with the moons Phobos and Deimos orbiting at their correct relative speed. Phobos orbits at the tremendously fast pace of three revolutions in just under 24 hours. The Orrery sits upon a American Walnut wood base supported by three adjustable instrument legs. The total height of the Orrery is 10 inches, the base is 10 inches in diameter and the Mars arm extends 7 inches from the centre. (All sizes are approximate) The Orrery in the picture will not be the exact one that you receive as all our Orrery are handmade to order.
